論文書きながら調べた表現についてまとめます。今回は”regarding”です。
目次：
単語の意味と共起表現、クラスター
「～に関して」「～の点で」などの意味を持ち、文頭に来ることもあれば、文中で形容詞的に名詞の補足をする場合もあります。
コーパスでの共起表現をみてみると関連する名詞としてinformation, question, issueなどの表現が並びます。
これはおそらくinformation regarding ~＝「～に関しての情報」と言ったように、あとから内容を補足する使われ方が多いのだと思います。そのため、先に来る名詞は一般的な情報をもつ語が出てくることが多く感じられます。用例にもまた出てきます。
また、あとに続く語句としてクラスターをみてみると
regarding the use of, regarding the role of, regarding the nature ofなどが挙がります。
説明の文章などで「～の使い方に関して」というような使われ方があるからでしょうか。あまり医学系論文では使われないクラスターな気もします。
用例
Since there has been no conclusive evidence regarding the treatment of ocular myasthenia, treatment guidelines were recently issued by the European Federation of Neurological Societies/European Neurological Society (EFNS/ENS).*1
Second, we obtained no data regarding the association between drug therapy and generalization from ocular myasthenia.*1

これはいずれもevidence, data, conclusionといった情報を持つ語句の補足として形容詞句的に作用している例ですね。
Debate still exists regarding whether preventive surgical decompression should be offered to high-risk patients experiencing cerebellar stroke.*2
Clinicians therefore remain uncertain regarding when to commence DOAC administration after acute ischaemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.*3
Only a relatively small number of LOVA case series have been published, and ambiguity remains regarding optimal management.*4
このあたりの例はremainとかexistのような存在を示す動詞で完成した文の後ろにregardingをつなげていくパターンですね。
よく研究関連の文章で「～はまだ明らかになっていない」っていうのがありますが、それを表現するときの一つの使い方になりそうです。いつもunclearとかunknownとか一遍通りに使ってました。
あとはregardingのあとにwhetherやwhen to, how toあたりの語句をつなげるのもどうも相性がよさそうです。
Regarding amino acid PET, methionine (MET) uptake
reflects an increase of amino acid transport and protein synthesis and is related to cellular proliferation.*5
Regarding safety endpoints, prasugrel was as safe as clopidogrel.*6
文頭にくるregardingのパターンです。何の話題か示すときに使われています。
Recent 7T MRI studies revealed differences between NMOSD and MS
specifically regarding cortical lesions (frequent in MS but absent in NMOSD) and white matter lesions*7
regardingの前にspecificallyを挟むことで一部を具体的な情報の補足に使われています。
