【〜を含む】include/ encompass/ compriseの違い【医学論文の英語表現】

さて、今回は「〜を含む」といった表現の違いです。先日読んでいた心停止後の予後予測のメタアナリシスで以下のような表現がありました。

Survivors of HIBI can experience a wide range of clinical outcomes along a spectrum encompassing full neurologic recovery, persistent vegetative states, or severe or mild disabilities, thereby making accurate prognostication imperative to inform health care teams and caregivers.

encompassという単語は「〜含む」という意味で使われ、後ろにそこに含まれる要素が並べられているわけですが、これはinclude等とどう違うのでしょうか。見ていきます。

単語の意味と共起表現

単語の意味と使われやすい共起表現を見ていきます。

・include

to contain something as a part of something else, or to make something part of something else

includeは「目的となる語句が主語の一部として含まれる」ということを表すには比較的広い意味で使われる表現となるようです。目的語として使われやすいものもnumber, member, cost, name, child, womanなど概念的な要素で幅広く使われます。

・encompass

to include different types of things

encompassが他の単語と異なるのはdifferent types of thingsというのが定義としても強調されている点です。いろんな種類のものを含むという大前提がありますので、共起表現として目的語になりやすいものとして今回の例にあったようなspectrumやvariety, range, aspectというある程度の幅を含む表現が並びます。

また同じようなイメージで幅広い、面積のようなものもこれで表されます。主語にdistrict, territory, parkといったものがあり、目的語にacre(エーカー、面積ですね), mile, areaなどが並びます。

例えば
National park encompasses 50,000 acres.
みたいな感じですね

・comprise

to have things or people as parts or members; to consist of

compriseも含むという意味で使われますが、こちらは「〜に成る」「〜を構成する」といった意味合いが含まれています。よって前述したencompassのように面積のほか、パーセンテージを表す場合でも使われます。

例えば
The male population comprises about 50 percent.
のように構成する割合を述べるために使われます。

また、先ほどのincludeとの違いについてはNew Oxford American Dictionaryで以下のように述べられ、違いが明確にされています。

Include has a broader meaning than comprise.…中略…the word comprise implies that there are no accomodations other than those listed. Include can be used in this way too, but it als used in a nonrestrictive way, implying that there may be other things not specifically mentioned that are part of the same category, as in the price includes a special welcome pack.

つまり、compriseはその構成する要素を全て述べるものであることに対して、includeはそういう使い方もできるけれど、部分的な要素を述べるに留まるのであって、他の部分もあることを暗に示しているとしています。

この辞書によれば時々見られる”including, …and more!”という表現は、includeを使う時点で他の要素が含まれることは暗に示されているので、重複しており誤りだとしています。

・include

免疫抑制状態の所見というのはリンパ球減少のみではありません。あくまで一部分を示しますのでincludeが使われているようです。

こちらも脳梗塞の２次予防に必要なのは血圧だけではありませんので、includeですね。

・encompass

The diagnostic criteria for PSP have been updated to encompass a range of clinical subtypes but have not been prospectively studied.

PSP（進行性核上性麻痺）の診断基準がいろんな臨床の型を「含められる」ようにアップデートされているということで、様々な型があることを強調するためencompassなのでしょう。共起表現としてrangeがよく使われることも納得できます。

Given the lack of objective biomarkers and the spectrum of different disorders that likely encompass mTBI, clinicians are encouraged to adopt a probabilistic, rather than definitive, diagnostic and prognostic framework.

逆にspectrum, rangeといった言葉が主語となり、その中でmTBI(mild traumatic brain injury)を含むということを述べるためにもencompassが使われています。

・comprise

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) comprise 4 subtypes.

4つのサブタイプから成るということで、占める要素が全て含まれているのでcompriseが使われています。

Neurologists comprised 1.5% (12,317) of individual providers who received Medicare payments and were paid $1.15 billion by Medicare in 2012.

パーセンテージなどある概念の中で一部を占めることを具体的に示す場合はcompriseが使われるようです。
