今回は「主に」「概ね」「もっぱら」などの表現で使われる副詞の違いについて調べていきます。
単語の意味と共起表現
さて、まずは単語の意味を調べていきます。
・largely
almost completely
・predominantly
mostly or mainly
・primarily
mainly
この3つは意味だけ見るとほぼ酷似しているように見えますが、元になった形容詞を考えると違いが浮き彫りになります。
largeは純粋に数やサイズが大きいことを示しますが、predominantは他に比べてnoticeable, importantであるという意味合いも持ちます。またprimaryは他と比べて最もimportantである、一番という意味合いが強いです。医学論文だとprimary outcomeという表現でお馴染みですね。
この違いを前提にしてSkellで共起しやすい単語を見ると、わかりやすいです。
largely:
due to, base, ignore, depend, responsible, consist, unknown, unchanged, remain, replace, compose
数量や頻度を示すような表現が多いですね。consist, composeなど構成を表すような単語も使われるようです。意外とunchanged, remainといった「ほとんど変わらない、そのまま」といった単語と使われやすいのも興味深いです。続いて
predominantly:
white, Muslim, black, male, Christian, rural, Catholic, agricultural, consist, compose
宗教・性別などの属性を表す形容詞がほとんどです。これは明らかに並列した他の副詞と違った特徴ですね。例えば“The population has been predominantly white.“みたいな感じで使うようです。
primarily:
focus, consist, base, due to, concern, use, responsible, design, compose, aim, intend, rely
largelyと似ている動詞もいくつかありますが、aim, intend, designといった作り手の意図が入った単語が並ぶのは特徴でしょうか。「一番」だという恣意的な表現であることによるのかもしれません。
・exclusively
only
さて、あともう一つ似たような単語としてexclusivelyを並べましたが、こちらは日本語だと「排他的に」と訳されることもあるようにちょっと違った印象があります。上記のようにonlyに近い意味で用いられています。
ただ、コーパス（COCA）をみても明らかに学術分野向けな表現ではあるので、onlyではなくてこちらを使えるとオシャレな感じがします。
ただ、もちろん全体の使用頻度としてはonlyの方が多いです。（※「exclusively→学術分野の使用頻度が多い」であって「学術分野→exclusivelyが多い」わけではない。ベイズの定理でお馴染みのやつです。）
共起表現としては
focus, concentrate, devote, dedicate, rely
などがあります。primarilyと似通ったところもありますが、devote, dedicateなどよりのめり込んだ、集中させたような表現があるところが特徴ですね。

Skellで見たようにunchanged, unknownといった否定的な形容詞と合わせて「ほとんど知られていない」「ほとんど変化がない」というような使われ方をしています。何らかの概念における「大部分が」という意味ですね。

「大部分が〜に頼っている」ということでrely, depend, baseなんかも組み合わせやすい単語と言えるでしょう。

ちょっと変わった使われ方としては”largely because”で「主に〜の理由で」という意味で接続詞の修飾もするようです。上記の文は「1990から2017年にかけて主に高齢化によって、ほぼ全ての神経疾患の負担が増加している」という意味となります。
・predominantly
さてpredominantlyですが、上記の共起表現で触れたように属性を表す単語との組み合わせで基本的に用いられているようです。医学的には人種だけでなく解剖学的な部位との組み合わせが多く見られます。例を見ていきましょう。

これは片頭痛治療薬のerenumabの臨床試験の2次解析ですが、患者が「主に」女性であることを示しています。

解剖学的な部位や系統を「属性」としてpredominantlyが使われています。こういった表現は背景・結果を述べる場面で大いに役立ちそうです。

evaluate, assess, use, focusなど意図的に何かに的を絞るような動詞と使われる例が多く見受けられました。特にfocusとの組み合わせは頻度が多いように思います。primary outcomeと同様に何を研究の主たる目的としているかを述べるときには役立つ表現であると思われます。

上記のlargelyと似たような意味合いでbased, consistといった表現も見られるほか、predominantlyと同様に解剖学的部位を表す名詞とも一緒に使われています。ただ、頻度としてはpredominantlyよりは少ないでしょう。

「単に〜だけで見られる」「単に〜だけで影響を与える」などの意味でaffect, rely ~ onといった動詞や属性を表す名詞を伴うことが多いです。少し弱めて”almost exclusively”という表現も散見されました。
